Jyeshtha, also spelled Jyeshta, is one the 12 Hindu lunar months. Purnima means full moon. The monthly Purnimas, or the full moon has a great significance, of spiritual importance, religiousness etc, among the Hindus. Jyeshtha corresponds to the Gregorian May-June period. The Gregorian date of the 28th of June 2018 marks this Hindu holy event-occurrence of 2nd Jyeshtha Purnima in this year, which is unique in this year.
Jyeshtha is a Hindu lunar calendar month. The Hindu calendar lunar months are the Vaisakha, Jyeshtha, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashvina, Kartik, Agrahana, Pausha, Magha, Phalguna, and Chaitra. These correspond to the Hindu solar months –Mesa, Vrishabh, Mithun, Kartak, Simha, Kanya, Tula, Vrishchika, Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha, and Mina, respectively.
The months correspond-relate to the seasons and also the zodiac signs. The zodiac signs being – Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kark (Cancer), Simh (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrischik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces).
Many Hindus observe Vrat on Purnima. Vrat means fasting. Many devotees wake up early, bathe, purify-clean their area, etc. They perform prayers. For those possible, they take a dip in the holy river Ganga. The dip is believed to have great purification significance and washes away the sins. Some take to meditation. Many visit temples. Many start the holy pilgrimage on this day, e.g., Amarnath Yatra in Uttarakhand.
Jyeshtha Purnima is also celebrated as Jagannath Purnima, Snan Purnima, and Devasnana Purnima, that is region wise. Jagannath Puri temple in the Indian State of Orissa is famous for the Hindu deity Lord Jagannath. The meaning of ‘Jagannath’ is the Lord of the Universe. Lord Jagannath is regarded as an avatar of Lord Vishnu. Many devotees also worship Lord Vishnu to seek his blessings and other purposes like prosperity, good health, wealth etc.

Om Bhur Bhuvah Swaha, Tat Savitur Varenyam,
Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat.
